This week’s portrait.
1930s Hollywood Art Deco Aphrodite pinup portrait of Sadie @SweetSadieBaby
(Yes she is “drawn” like that in real life too)
Yearning for an ethnic pinup portrait in a classic Hollywood style fused with Greek mythology,
Sadie commissioned me to solve her problem and create the most complex glamour mash up I have ever laid my hands on. Although people tell me to keep things simple, the OCD part of me cannot resist a new visual challenge. ( a problem I am constantly working on)
Sadie (Aphrodite) is portrayed as the Greek Goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, resting on a bed of sea foam floating ashore on a scallop shell from which she was born. The over all treatment is inspired by 1930s Hollywood glamour photographer George Hurrell meets 1960s “Peplum Cinema” meets the modern “boombastic bombshell”.
She is reclining on the planet Venus (associated with Taurus) with sea shell and sun ray zig zag patterns both in an Art Deco treatment beside the constellation of the Bull. She is also adorned with a taurus symbol necklace. Because of her extreme curves, I used lots of repeating round shapes to help the viewers eyes dance across the canvas.
The process took over 500 layers of elements and a few years of on and off work to blend it just right.
