Why do my pinup portrait transformations takes up to 100 hours to create?
These tiny Instagram photos really don’t do any detail justice. For my “A game” portraits, I compose a complete full body sexy pinup from just a simple cellphone camera photo as reference.
It’s not enough to be an illustrator, but to also wear the hats of a fashion stylist, hair stylist, set designer, and makeup artist. These things consume time, but yield fulfilling results. Curious about being transformed?—-> PortraitsbySantiago@gmail.com <—-

“Is this an app? This is just like iMadeFace, right? Is this some type of filter? Do me! Do me! Hook me up? It will only take you a little bit to make.” Some of the many comments and questions I received on the daily.

I really love my day job as a portrait artist and very blessed to do what I do, however, many are unaware of how much work I put into these pieces.

Here is a process example of how I construct my images. The full process may take anywhere from 12 - 80 hours (spread over several months) to create depending on what the client paid for. I usually begin with fun blobby shapes to loosen up and develop the overall structure of the portrait. Everything starts is greyscale. it’s much easier to visualize and buildup the tones, shapes and shadows with one color. Once the greyscale art is soild, I add color.

It’s an old technique based on the Florentine artistic traditions in 1400- 1500 Italy. The old Italian artists started their portraits in one tone and gradually built up the colors through transparent color oil glazes until they achieved the desired result. My technique is simply a laborious digital version of that process.

Befroe and after “Mother & Daughter” portrait commission of Francisca @franan74 and Miya. Long time fan, friend, & best customer @midniteink commissioned me to create a portrait of her daughter and granddaughter as a surprise gift.
Both are mixed heritage of Puerto Rican and Japanese. She requested cherry blossoms with an asian influenced blouse complete with “frog clasps”. Here is the result.
