“Jet Magazine” pinup portrait of Barbara O. from Queens NY. Thanayi wanted to surprise her big sister Barbara with a unique birthday gift to celebrate her 50th. She requested a vintage styled pinup. She also wanted me to make her sis look a bit younger. Being inspired by many of the 1950’s Jet magazine covers I’ve recently posted, my desire was to take advantage of that concept and recreating her personal Jet Magazine cover. Unfortunately too many of the vintage cover tag lines were politically incorrect and are very offensive to both black and white audiences by today’s standards. Although I wanted to keep the art closely authentic to those original covers, I had to remember that this artwork is to hang on someones home to display before their family, not in a museum to shock the audience. The tag lines had to be tweaked ,cleaned, and digestible.
